JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A Clinton man will spend the next fifteen years behind bars after pleading guilty to a series of crimes that occurred years ago.

After multiple continuations and judicial reassignments, Barak Patton entered pleas to multiple criminal cases in October and was sentenced to a total of 42 years in prison.

The sentences were 15 years each for two armed robbery charges, and 12 years for a sexual battery account related to the assault of a 14-year-old girl.

All sentences will run concurrently, meaning Patton’s tentative release date is October 7, 2039.

Court records show Patton has a lengthy criminal history, with charges dating back to September 2016.

That’s when he allegedly shot Timothy Dwayne Miles with a .410 shotgun. He was charged with aggravated assault in May 2018, but court records show he never stood trial.

Barak Patton criminal timeline:

A year after Myles was shot, in 2017, Patton was arrested again, this time for having a stolen .40-caliber Smith & Wesson. He was also indicted on this charge in May 2018.

It is unclear when Patton first bonded. Before his first indictment, Patton robbed two Clinton gas stations: the Citgo at 410 US 80 East and the Shell station at 149 E. Northside Dr.

Court documents show that the Citgo robbery took place between January 1 and January 30, 2018, while the Shell robbery took place between January 1 and February 9, 2018. However, he was not charged on these charges until July 2020.

Months before they were indicted on these charges, Patton and others were involved in another robbery on January 1, 2020, that of Clark Taylor in the 1000 block of Thompson Drive, also in Clinton. According to that complaint, Patton shot Taylor during the incident.

All cases were assigned to Judge Tomie Green of the Senior Circuit Court. In April 2020, Patton sent a letter to Green, begging her to post a bond, promising to attend every court appearance and wear an ankle monitor if released.

“I just want my mother and my grandparents. I can’t be in my son’s life right now, and the boys here don’t like me because they say I’m a traitor,” he wrote. “Can you please help me with the anklet, please?”

Patton is related to the late Houston Patton, a former Hinds County judge, and Hinds County Constable John Brown, according to Jackson Jambalaya.

On May 22, 2020, Green reinstated a $10,000 bond on all charges. As part of the bail, he had to submit to a curfew from 6pm to 5am and remain under house arrest.

Court records show that Patton forcibly raped a 14-year-old girl just seven days after his release. Citing that incident, Green revoked Patton’s bond the following month. And the following month, Patton was indicted on new charges related to the rape.

However, matters would drag on for years before action was taken. In the case of Timothy Myles, the case was continued several times between October 2018 and 2019.

The cases of robberies and assaults also continued several times, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, into 2022.

Following Green’s retirement, the cases were reassigned to Special Judge Frank Vollor in 2022. Once again, court records show that little to no action was taken until they were reassigned to Senior Status Judge James Bell on May 10, 2024, following Vollor’s retirement.

Then things started moving. Court records show Bell scheduled status conferences in the cases on May 13. On May 30, he entered orders setting the trial dates.

Patton agreed to enter pleas on several counts in October. According to his plea agreement, several counts are included in his record.

The charges included forcible rape in the case of the 14-year-old girl, conspiracy in the cases of the Citgo and Shell station incidents, and both counts in connection with the case involving Clark Taylor.

Patton is currently being held at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. He was transferred there in November, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections website.
